My weekend purchase

Background history to my story/weekend:

There is a well known yard sale around my area, that is called the 75 mile yard sale...I thought it was this weekend (guess how pumped I was about it, too pumped)...then I found out it was last weekend. My balloon deflated quickly, and was disappointed that I had missed probably several good deals.

My story:

For a little while I have been wanting a craft table, one to create all my paper projects on, one to create all my cards on, one I didn't have to clear off because I had to set the table. I came up with having a drafting table, so the search began (a quiet search mind you), but didn't ever think I would find one this fast and at a reasonable...ok not reasonable but a bargain, nope still not right. I would have to say the word I might find is a "screaming deal" a good find...lol, okay I think you get the jist :p!
I looked on a site called Kijiji, it is a site that is for every city ( I think that is how it works) and you type in what you are looking for and ads will pop up corresponding to what you are looking for. I have used this site in the past, I must warn you it isan addictive site, and have been pretty satisfied with the things I have gotten from the people. So I typed in "Drafting table" into the search box, and several (2-3 pages) worth of ads popped up...so I started going through the ads. I came across this one ad, about a drafting table being gotten rid of at the "75 mile" yard sale this weekend (lol, this weekend...really was last weekend) and so I sent off a message to the seller. I asked if the table was still available, if it was in good condition and I asked how much they were asking for it... keeping in mind it was probably way out of my price range but one could be hopeful right?? They replied almost right away, telling me that it was still available, that the yard sale was last weekend (there hear it...that noise was my bubble bursting lol) and that they were asking $20.oo for it. I decided that I should go take a look at it, so I called up my parents (who own a truck) to see if they were available and they said they were...so they came with me to check this table out. For that price I was expecting to find a piece of junk...one not worth $20.oo one that was like from the 18th century (lol, not even sure they had them then)! I drove in there this morning to check it out, I was surprised to see what I found!! It was in great shape, it folds up easily (bonus), it does need a good cleaning, it does have 2 chips out of the top of the table but easily fixable I think. Glad to have one of those able to fix pretty much anything kind of dh's :) , who would do anything he could to fix it :)! So I got it, my parents drove it out to our home and it is sitting next to me right now waiting to find that perfect new place to put it...got to do some cleaning of my crafty corner first. I am excited :D, if you couldn't tell from this post !!
Anyways, I am looking at this white table....thinking "my that is one white table, lol...with a bit of dirt and paint on it." I am interested in or thinking about doing something fun to the top of this table...I know I should wait for dh to fix the top first before I do something else to it. I was wanting to either paint something on it...put some really nice paper (like Martha Stewart paper) and put some protective coating on it. I need ideas ladies, or suggestions, I would love some inspiration please...there might be a little itty bitty blog candy involved here too :D!! I would love to have any ideas you might have, and for those wonderful ideas I will give you a chance at winning some yummy little blog candy. How's that for an exchange..win win I think :D! I will leave this open until Tuesday of this week at lunch :D! So post away :D!

What a great find and a great story. Thanks for the heads up on the website. I'll have to see if we have one here in Portland. As for the drafting table makeover: I covered/decoupgaged a small end table in torn pieces of wallpaper from discontinued or out-of-date books you can get for free or very cheap at the wallpaper store. I used Mod Podge to attach them, then put on several coats to make a smooth surface. That took the most time, but it was fun. I gave it to my sister-in-law as a gift and she wanted more. I haven't gotten around to doing any more yet. It's cheap, especially if you can find an old end table at a garage sale. You'll never know it was the same piece when you're done. Have fun! Can we see before and after pictures??

Very cool!! I love garage sales!! I would stamp my favorite stamp set on the table with some paint. I would use Bold Butterfly or Decorative Daisy. That would be fun!!

Wow how cool is that! Miss the sale, that you would double check, it's available and now it's YOURS! That really ROCKS! I would put MY STAMPING GROUNDS somewhere on the table. I would use stamps, papers and anything else that gives you inspiration, comfort, and of course a smile on your face when you see it. Can't wait to see your table. Thanks for a chance.

I know how excited you must feel about your purchase. I know I was looking for a table and found an old wood piece in an attic. My husband put some legs on it and I covered the table in an old remnant of material. All I did was make a piece the size of my table...add 5 inches to the sides and seamed it leaving a slight opening. Then I pulled a drawstring through the casing and finished it off with a clip. I put it over the table and pulled the drawstring tight. I have a snug fitting cover that is washable and easy to remove. If you can sew that would be a good idea that should work even with a folding table.
The plus is that it's easily replaced and it's washable if you happen to get it messy.

You could cover it in paper/stamped images and put them onto the top of the table. Have your local home improvement or hardware store cut a piece of plexiglass the size of the top of your drafting table and have DH use four wood screws (one in each corner) to adhere to top of table.
This way if you get bored with the design you can unscrew the screws and change it out. Added bonus, DH doesn't have to fix the chips in it since you will actually be working on the plexiglass. You can also put pictures under the glass.

Hope this helps, thanks for allowing me to play....

Is it possible to put a piece of glass over the top? Then you could add something under the glass for any season or time of the year?

I think a stencil on top would be great, then a protective coat of varnish.
Thanks for the chance.

I would put photos of your family, special mementos, etc. and then put a piece of glass on top.

I would try hand painting or decoupage of some sort. Of course, I say that, but then I'd end up messing it up! Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll love it! And I'd love to see before and after photos!

I have a craft table with a slash on the top. I glued a large cutting board right over it since I always need a cutting board and measuring board anyway. Hid the slash:) Glad you found a great purchase in spite of missing the sales.

What a great story. There is a right time for everything!

I would make the top pretty and functional. I think stamping a design with paint would be most durable, and maybe you could incorporate a painted ruler or other useful objects in your design. Some sort of clear protective finish is a probably a good idea.

Wow! What a great find. Hmmmm...you could probably just put wall paper on it or even get some stencils and stencil a really cute design on it. Good luck and hopefully you find something to put on your new table.
